50 Cent - Street King Immortal

By

Curtis Jackson, 50 Cent, is about to release an album I've been anticipating ever since he dropped three singles - New Day, My Life, and, most recently, Major Distribution. All of which put hip hop back into a place I remember 10 years ago, a hip hop I grew up with. During that time, I heard the words but unlikely had a clue what they were rapping about.

With the new hip hop heads that are carrying the torch - Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, Tyga, etc. - hip hop now encompasses many sub genres, or feelings. 50 Cent, for me, is going to be adding more fuel to that hip hop flame that was renewed from all the hits that came out last year. Thinking back 2012 was full of amazing albums like the Roots, Slaughter House, Lupe, Macklemore, Beastie Boys, Nas, B.o.B, Slum Village the list goes on.

Anyhow, I'm really looking forward to 50's album release, which is supposed to be February 26th, 2013. Although, I've seen no indication that this date is true other than from a quick Google search. I'll be reposting a review on the album after it comes out. Check out his single below.

Skylar Grey

By

The past couple of years, Skylar Grey has been part of many hip hop singles that I considered some of my favorites of 2012. This includes Dr. Dre's I Need A Doctor, Lupe Fiasco's Words I Never Said, Slaughter House's Welcome to Our House, and Diddy's Coming Home among others that sampled her amazing vocals. Her beautiful vocals provide an amazing contrast to the mc's rapping, and her lyrics are just as beautiful.

Her latest song C'mon Let Me Ride featuring Eminem, is quite different from the previous mentioned songs, however; this is because its intention was to mock the songs that have taken over the radio. After reading some YouTube comments, I realized that a significant amount of people are unable to recognize satire, and this scares me a bit. Anyways, I'm happy Skylar Grey and Eminem had fun with this song.

C'mon Let Me Ride is a bit reminiscent of a song released only online by Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, and 50 Cent; although, Skylar's is far less direct to the industry. I guess we all have a part to do with the reason the music industry is, in my opinion, crap now. Lots of my friends do just like "a hot beat and a catchy hook".

Back to Skylar, she has her first LP coming out soon, March 2013 since she became known as Skylar Grey. If you want to listen to some of her older stuff, check out Like Blood, Like Honey. I'm looking forward to her album as I think she'll be giving the world a nice range of genre, style, and creativity. Be on the look out for Don't Look Down coming out March 2013.

DJ Yup | DJ Bobby V | DJ Popo

By

Over winter break I partied a little, programmed a bit and didn't practice at all. I didn't dance over break because I was watching and listening to some of my friends DJ at clubs. They literally went from house parties last year to ending 2012 headlining at clubs in Seattle! If you ever visit the best city in the world, try and figure out if any of the following DJs are playing that night.

First up is DJ Yup. I heard Yup two nights in a row at Volume and the Last Supper Club. A good friend of mine had mentioned him multiple times expressing his unmatched skills and how underrated he was. After the first night DJ Yup surpassed my expectations with his flawless mixing, live mash-ups, crowd control, and song selections. Show some love and support on his social media. Rock this mix at your next party!

DJ Yup, Sangyup Jeon, IAMMEDIC

Up next, are two upcoming DJs in Seattle, both I've talked about before. DJ Popo and DJ Bobby V. These two rocked Volume's monthly Spectrum show, bringing killer club mixes making the whole place jump. It seems like this will be a monthly event, so check out Volume's calendar for the next show. Check out Bobby V's mix from November's Spectrum event. Popo's opening set, that I didn't get to hear the whole time because Volume took forever to open, was mixed well and had a wide range of genres; he was having fun with it. After Popo, Bobby V surprised me with his club bangers that got the club screaming. Definitely happy these two are able to do what they love on stage now. This event is only for party people, the poopers need to stay home.

Happy New Year!

By

2012 was a long year full of new opportunities for the Hip Hop Student Association. We took part in many performances, and gave Oregon State University a small taste of hip hop dance.

Everyone should be proud of the new talents they've acquired. Many of you started dancing this Fall quarter, and improved extremely fast. At least, far faster than I did at the start. I hope you take your new skills and love for the dance and share it with many other people.

Also, remember that the Hip Hop Student Association will need new officers to help lead the way as this school year comes to an end. This is a great opportunity for many of you to take on new leadership roles, make new friends and take a step out of your comfort zone.
